An Update on MomPosted: January 8, 2009
Mom had her surgery today. Good news, I suppose, in that it was “only” double bypass instead of the triple variety.
Better news — after spending five hours in the OR she did as expected with no surprises. Doctor was pleased with the results and thinks it is really going to help Mom when she is fully recovered.
She’s in ICU for at least 24 hours, depending on how she starts to take control of her heart rate and breathing without help from machines. These first 24 hours are the most critical. But, while she’s not completely in the clear yet, doctor feels good that things will continue the way they are headed.
My brother and sister and I were all there today, along with Tom’s wife. We were fortunate that her surgery started later than we thought which meant that the three of us got to see her before she was brought to the operating room. That was a good thing for each of us.
In typical Mom fashion, she didn’t think we needed to be there and had told us not to come up until Saturday. Um, no. Sorry, Mom. Of course we were going to be there!
So then it was just wait time for at least five hours. It actually went pretty quickly — of course having a good book helps the time go by fairly quickly.
Doc came up after surgery (after calling my cell phone from the operating room…cool) and explained to us what happened and what to expect. Then, about 40 minutes later, we were able to see her. She was still sedated, but it was good to see her and have the chance to say a short thankful prayer under my breath. Because, I have to tell you, I was nervous. More than I expected to be.
So now we wait and start the recovery process. She’ll be in Boston at least until Monday, if not Tuesday or Wednesday. She might come home then or go to a rehab facility to help with physical therapy and diet.
Not sure when I’m going up again. Might go Friday and then Sunday. Just not sure yet.
Thank you to all of you for your thoughts and prayers for Mom and my family these last few days. I can’t tell you how much that level of support means and meant to me. You all helped me deal with something that is not easy to deal with….and you did it well.
I am blessed to have such awesome friends.
Thanks again! And please keep Mom and our family in your prayers for another few days!
